Teachers Today

Teachers Today is a one hour presentation by teachers for teachers that inspires us to actively build a better world through the young lives we touch and the leaders we create. Teachers Today goes beyond curriculum objectives and assessment techniques to raise awareness about the connection between our classrooms and our world, challenging and motivating us to use the power we have to positively affect both. The presentation focuses on recognizing students’ gifts and on empowering teachers to bring inspiration into the classroom. We are teaching the generation we have been waiting for!

Presentation

Why did you become a teacher? Was it to mark papers, patrol playgrounds and do report cards? Or was it to make a lasting difference in young lives? This presentation will challenge you to step outside of your comfort zone and reach your highest potential as a teacher and leader of today’s youth.

  • Are you a teacher who believes that all students have gifts they might not be using?
  • Would you like to bring the world into the microcosm of your classroom?
  • Do you want to introduce activities that help students affect positive change in the school and in the world?
Through personal stories and engaging multimedia, expert speaker Rebecca Fleisig will inspire you to realize that teachers have the power to help young people make a positive difference in the classroom and the world. Rebecca’s presentation will encourage and empower you as you guide your students on their journey to becoming active local and global citizens.

Presenter

Rebecca Fleisig is a teacher who loves her work. She believes that all young people can change our world for the better, as long as they receive the truth, knowledge, support and inspiration from their teachers that they need. Armed with this unshakable faith in the power of youth, Rebecca joins Leaders Today in bringing the new Teachers Today program to schools across North America.

Originally from Collingwood, Ontario, Rebecca has been teaching for ten years. She has international experience, teaching preschool in North Carolina, and high school in Japan. She returned to Canada to teach a Grade 5-6 enrichment program and Grade 7 English in Waterloo. She is currently working as a character development consultant for the Waterloo Region District School Board and has recently been offered the newly created position of character development teacher for JK-Grade 7 at Edna Staebler Public School.

With Cameron Shaver, Rebecca co-wrote the program "Walk the Walk", which encourages people to actually live the things they know are right and kind. She has initiated a twinning friendship with a school in Swaziland and was recently honoured with the Distinguished Teacher award. Rebecca became involved with Free The Children in 2002 after buying a copy of Take Action! and inviting the first of several Leaders Today speaking tours to her school. In October 2004, during a conversation over gelato with former Leaders Today staff member Joe Opatowski, she asked whether she, as a teacher, could attend Leaders Today camps. Joe promptly told her she was too old! But an exciting idea was born that special day, and together with her friends and colleagues Christian Fleisig, Eddie Ing and Cameron Shaver, she worked to develop the Teachers Today presentation.

Rebecca and Christian form a happy family in Waterloo. In her spare time Rebecca loves to read, write, sing (especially ABBA songs!), spend time with her favourite people, challenge herself with different opinions and bake for people who love her cookies. She embraces the magic and mysteries of life and is inspired by the simple acts of kindness that really do change the world.
