Hawa Sabriye's Story

Hey friends,

“CAN I GET A WHATTY WHAT?”

I looked up to see a young woman scream this at the top of her lungs. I was sitting on the floor of the Montreal airport, getting ready to board a plane to Kenya with 25 other students on a Leaders Today Volunteer Trip. My initial thought was, “What am I getting myself into?”

This loud, outgoing lady was supposed to be one of my facilitators for the trip. I later learned her name was Brooke Thompson.

Brooke made the long plane trip very comfortable for me. She treated us as if she’d known us for years. Once we finally landed in Nairobi, Kenya, we met our other trip facilitator, Mr. Jesse Jewell. He welcomed us with a big grin and open arms.

Over the next few weeks I got to know Brooke and Jesse and realized what great facilitators they were. They bounced off each other perfectly when they spoke. They were amazing teachers who taught us everything from public speaking to assertive listening. They made us understand everything completely and taught in the funniest ways possible. I also loved the discussions I had with them. Brooke listened to everything I said and made me feel important. Jesse was always there for anyone and always had amazing stories to tell.

With Brooke’s energy and enthusiasm, the trip was always LEV3L! And with Jesse’s use of words such as “Awesome” and “Sweet,” there was never a frown on anyone’s face. Both of them took me out of my comfort zone and put me in my challenge zone. These two individuals have made me who I am.

Peace, love and honey mustard,
Hawa Sabriye
