Toronto Take Action! Academy
Join us August 10-17, 2008, in Toronto, Canada, for the 9th annual Take Action! Academy. Eye-opening and time-tested, this week-long social issues academy will get you up-to-speed on the state of the world’s pressing social issues, introduce you to others who share your concern and enthusiasm, develop and hone your leadership skills, and help you plan concrete actions to literally change the world
As a participant you receive both educational and hands-on learning through seminars, workshops, and our newly revised and bestselling Take Action! Curriculum. With one of the most culturally diverse and exciting cities on the planet, Toronto, Ontario as a backdrop, the Academy features five different levels of leadership training and the opportunity to experience some of the best events that Toronto has to offer. The Academy truly has something for young people of every age and leadership level.
The Academy’s workshops are based on an interactive model that explores and develops skills such as public speaking, personal discovery, assertive communication, fundraising tools, media interaction, and the inner-workings of our 7 Steps to Social Involvement. Special Free The Children Take Action! sessions are part of every workshop, where participants hear about real-life campaigns that have worked to raise awareness and make change in communities the world over.
Our dynamic facilitation team electrifies global audiences with compelling stories and inspiring words. The Academy is no exception. We’ll also have fun team-building activities and interactive social issues presentations from special guests and your peers from around the world.
Not only will you build your skills for the long-term, but you will put your new skills and confidence to the test with a volunteer day in the city of Toronto. These large community-building activities as well smaller group workshops are both incredible opportunities to meet other young leaders. Academy highlights
- Take Action! day: A day of volunteering in the biggest city in Canada, where there are many organizations and charities to put your passion into action.
- Skill development: Learn from the bestselling Take Action! guides, and participate in leadership workshops on public speaking, social issues, action planning, and the 7 Steps to Social Involvement.
- Expert peer facilitators:Through interactive discussion facilitators speak directly to the hearts and minds of youth, sharing travel stories and unique insights.
- Facilitator training: Provides those interested in leading groups, with the facilitation techniques to make them highly-effective leaders and equips individuals with knowledge and self-confidence.
- International and inclusive: Participants have joined us from Australia, Bosnia, England, Germany, India, Israel, Mexico, and South Africa, with ages typically ranging between 10 and 21 years.
- Issues and Interaction: While learning about important social issues, participants will be treated to fun-filled team-building exercises, as well as a dance and talent show.
