Krystal Loverin
Title: Leadership Facilitator
Interesting Fact: After being a competitive figure skater for nine years, Krystal Loverin won an essay contest and received the honour of skating for an afternoon with Canadian Olympic silver-medalist figure skater, Elvis Stojko.
Krystal Loverin first became aware of Free The Children during her Grade 11 social studies class, when she watched a video of then 12-year-old Craig Kielburgur rallying an audience of corporate representatives to raise money for the eradication of child labour. Inspired by Craig’s determination despite huge obstacles, Krystal created zines, art, poetry and music to spread awareness about global injustices. Her passion for world issues poured into her essays at school, and she won a literary scholarship of $500 for her post-secondary education as a result.
Eager to gain more life experiences before moving on to university, Krystal travelled with friends around the Kootenays region of British Columbia the summer after her high school graduation. Her experiences travelling and living out of a backpack helped shape her into the free spirit she is today. Krystal then participated in the August 2007 Take Action Academy in Surrey, British Columbia, and was exposed to the Free The Children vision of change. Upon seeing her intense enthusiasm and bubbly personality in action, the team at Free The Children invited Krystal to work as their First Nations youth facilitator and leadership coordinator for BC Aboriginal communities. She is part of the Tahltan First Nation of Northern British Columbia.
After seeing the social problems prevalent in small towns throughout North America, Krystal was moved to become involved in the solution. Her ambition in life is to make a difference for the betterment of the community. Always full of ideas, laughter and light, Krystal’s energy is infectious and abundant. She believes a love of life benefits all beings.
