Shelina's Story

My poem is a tribute to Joe Opatowski, to how he felt about Sierra Leone and to the reality of Sierra Leone. Thanks for taking your time to read this.

Sierra Leone
11 years of civil war
11 years of pain and torture
People dying, children fighting,
The world recently recognizing,
The fight that's been going on, in Sierra Leone.
Millions of lives have been torn
Amputations, Destructions
because of what?
OUR DIAMONDS
The diamonds that we wear
Around our fingers, earrings and outerwear
Lyrical Recognition like "Shine on 'Em"and "Diamonds are Forever"
That's how we know about Sierra Leone
And about the Diamonds that we own.
This is what the world has come to,
Nothing else matters, just me and you.
You’re living here enjoying, laughing,
While children with no legs, no hands crying,
Their days and nights spent reminiscing
About the times they had to kill,
Trying to get their stomachs to fill.
Holding guns instead of toys
Bombs carried by little boys
For what?
The diamonds that we wear
That don't break and tear
That we think will last forever
These are stones the child soldiers gather
For our desires, why should they suffer
The rebels and government
The real criminals in this war
The reason for children's involvement
Hopeless, jointless, a lifetime punishment
None of us aware of how it feels, the pain and agony
All we feel is sympathy and pity
So, what can we do?
For the sake of humanity
We can keep on living the life of ignorance
Or we can raise awareness
and make a difference
Around us, around our community, our country
and the WORLD we live in
"We shall change from Me to We,
ONE nation, ONE generation, ONE family."
