Dan Mossip-Balkwill

Title: Leadership Facilitator
Interesting Fact: Early in his university career, Dan received the nickname “Snuggles.” Much to his horror, it stuck.

An avid environmental advocate, Dan Mossip-Balkwill joined the Leaders Today team in 2007 with a passion for ecological preservation and youth empowerment. His role as a leadership facilitator allows him to apply those passions on a daily basis as he motivates youth in their efforts to make a positive impact in the world.

In 2006, Dan embarked on what might be called his own Erin Brockovich story. Working out of New Jersey for the community organization Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), Dan sought justice for thousands of Jersey City residents whose backyards were being polluted by chromium dumped by Fortune 500 companies. The companies claimed no responsibility and played down the effects of the drug, despite damaging and conclusive medical evidence against them. Dan’s job entailed interviewing New Jersey residents impacted by the pollution and helping them to turn their anger into action. It was one of the most valuable experiences of Dan’s life. Soon after, Dan delved deeper into environmental issues when he enrolled in the University of Toronto with a double major in environmental studies and philosophy, and a minor in environmental ethics. After graduating in 2007, Dan travelled overseas for a five-month backpacking trip across Europe.

Originally from Streetsville, Mississauga, Dan now lives in Toronto. An ardent sports fan, he never misses an opportunity to play his favourite sports, rugby and squash. He is also a part-time amateur filmmaker, and looks forward to indulging in this hobby at every chance he gets.
